Considered to be the second independence day celebrated in the United States, Juneteenth commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. The holiday originated in Galveston, Texas in 1865, and is celebrated today as an official federal holiday.

This year, the Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park is celebrating Juneteenth over the span of 3 days full of educational opportunities, music, food, and more. What better place to celebrate this holiday than at the place “Where Freedom Began”?

3rd Annual Juneteenth Campout with Joe McGill

Thursday, June 15th

6:00pm-6:00am

An incredible opportunity to enjoy an evening full of authentic Gullah food and thoughtful discussion led by historian, Joe McGill, guests are invited to rent a tent and enjoy a night under the stars. Adult and youth tickets start at $30, and tent rentals that accommodate 2 adults are available to rent starting at $25. You can purchase your tickets here.

Juneteenth Drum Circle

Friday, June 16th

5:30pm-7:00pm

Brought back due to popular demand, the Juneteenth Drum Circle will be a fun and energized way to honor the history and sense of community at Mitchelville. A powerful experience to be shared, please register for this event even though it’s free to attend. There will be food and vendors onsite. Free to attend, but please register here.

The main event, you won’t want to miss this day full of community and celebration. A great time to visit and explore the Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park if you’ve never been before, the event will have lively music, delicious food, and other vendors to enjoy!
