Winter Sunsets on Hilton Head Island

Hilton Head Island is known to have breathtakingly beautiful sunsets year-round. Finding the perfect spot to watch the sunset is always on visitors’ to-do lists, as it should be!

Did you know that sunrises and sunsets during the winter months are scientifically proven to be more vivid and beautiful?

Here’s the Scoop:

With colder temperatures comes less humidity, generally speaking. When there’s significantly less water vapor in the air, the colors within a sunset are more striking. Water vapor molecules adhere themselves to the naturally produced and man-made particles in the air, causing the light to scatter and become less intense. Therefore, the less water vapor there is, the clearer the view!

Another factor to consider is Earth’s tilt during this time period. North America’s prime sunset season is during the winter months because of the angle the sun is setting at, which actually makes sunsets last longer.

So, all in all, the combination of shorter days, longer sunsets, and brilliant hues are sure to stop you in your tracks!

Here are some fantastic spots to watch the sunset:

The Beach

This is the obvious choice. Pick a beach, any beach! Who wouldn’t want to take a walk on the beach during sunset? In Hilton Head’s temperate climate, you’ll be comfortable while admiring the dazzling hues. If you’re a morning person, grab some coffee and head to the beach for sunrise!

Along Broad Creek

Grab a bite to eat at either Fishcamp on Broad Creek, Up the Creek Pub & Grill, or the Old Oyster Factory for dazzling sunset views over the marsh.

From a Marina

Harbour Town in Sea Pines includes one of the best marinas on Hilton Head where you can find yourself enjoying an evening stroll, a bit of shopping, and a bite to eat. Take a gorgeous photo of the sun setting behind the Harbour Town Lighthouse, and head over for dinner and drinks at The Crazy Crab

Bonus—Speaking of the Crazy Crab, their additional location at Jarvis Creek is a spectacular waterfront dining option known for great seafood and gorgeous sunsets.

Fore the Love of Golf!

As kids, we like to emulate what our parents and grandparents do. I personally can remember watching my grandfather work a nine-to-five job and then rush home to spend any extra time left in the day to perfect his golf game. His love for the sport and dedication eventually paid off when he was chosen to be a part of the Professional Golfers’ Association of America Tour also known as the PGA Tour. Intrigued by not only my grandfather’s success, but by the sport itself, I eventually caught the “golf bug”.

My golf passion grew over time and it became a full-on hobby. I was active in several after-school golf programs throughout middle school and high school, then continued my journey in college where I was captain of the golf team. One of the perks of the team was we were fortunate to travel nationally and play on some of the most prestigious courses designed by legendary professional golfers. However out of all the courses we played, the one that was forever engraved in my memories was a course in Hilton Head, South Carolina. Designed by the sensational Arnold Palmer, the Wexford exclusive golf course not only challenged my skills, but the views of Broad Creek, marshlands, and the harbor, made this experience one that I would never forget.

I knew I would never be the next Tiger Woods, but after visiting Hilton Head once, I was hooked. After I graduated college it wasn’t long before I decided to uproot my life to the Lowcountry and become a permanent resident on Hilton Head. This island has provided me with an opportunity to have a career and continue to play golf conveniently with the abundance of golf communities and courses it has available.

Living on Hilton Head Island is a golfer’s paradise. The weather is ideal for most of the year, especially now, in October, when there is an ocean breeze in the air and the temperature is in the mid to high 70’s. Whether you’re a tourist just vising for a couple of days or a permanent resident, Hilton Head has a golf course for every skill level. It won’t be long before you too decide to call Hilton Head home.

In the meantime, here are some of the courses we recommend you check out on your next Hilton Head vacation.

Port Royal Golf Club

10 Clubhouse Dr
Hilton Head Island, SC 29928

Located along the Atlantic coastline on the northwestern point of Hilton Head Island, is the Port Royal Golf & Racquet Club. Designed by prolific golfer, George Cobb, the Port Royal Golf & Racquet Club features 2 different courses, Robber’s Row and Barony Course.

Make sure you stop in Robber’s Row Grille and indulge in their seasonal menu that features all the freshest local ingredients. In those months where the temperature does drop a little, there is a fireplace in the dining area and on the verandah to keep you nice and cozy.

Oyster Reef Club

155 High Bluff Rd
Hilton Head Island, SC 29928

Oyster Reef Golf Club opened in 1982, was immediately ranked as one of the Top 25 New Courses in America. This Rees Jones design has been voted one of the Top 20 Courses in the Carolinas and enjoys a reputation as a favorite among locals. The course tests golfers’ skills of all levels. Oyster Reef is known in the Hilton Head Island golf community for a warm greeting, and a friendly hand whenever you need it.

After you play a round with your friends, stop in at the LagerHead Tavern for a cold refreshing beer, alongside a tender Grilled Coulotte Steak, smothered with tarragon butter, charred onions, and fresh-cut French fries. A widely popular choice among guests.

Bear Creek Golf Club

237 Whooping Crane Way
Hilton Head Island, SC 29926

Another north end gem is Bear Creek Golf Club within the gates of Hilton Head Plantation. This Rees Jones-designed golf course stretches over 6,800 yards of the plantation. Surrounded by tall pines and natural areas, it has a set of five different tees that cater to every level of golfer. Grab some lunch, a draft beer or two, and enjoy a day of golfing with friends and family!

Palmetto Hall Plantation

108 Fort Howell Dr
Hilton Head Island, SC 29926

Palmetto Hall Plantation Club consists of two championship golf courses, the Arthur Hills Course and the Robert Cup Course. In addition to these signature courses, the club offers a variety of amenities including tennis and swimming, making these courses extremely popular for families.

Dolphin Head Golf Club

56 High Bluff Road
Hilton Head Island, SC 29926

This semi-private course opened in 1974 and was professional golfer, Gary Player’s first course in the Hilton Head area. With stunning views at every turn, Dolphin Head Course quickly became a premier golf destination for many. The course layout offers players of all skill levels, an exceptional and challenging golf experience. This is definitely a course you must try!

Top Outdoor Dining Patios in Hilton Head

This is my second fall season in Hilton Head and in my opinion, this is the best time of the year to visit this beautiful island. The weather is finally under 90 degrees, the humidity has begun to drop and there is a refreshing salty breeze in the air. It is the ideal time to take advantage of the outdoor dining patios at restaurants, coffee shops, and bars located throughout the island.

Here are some of the best patios on Hilton Head where you can enjoy a great culinary experience along with breathtaking views.

Fishcamp on Broad Creek

Fishcamp on Broad Creek is an island staple and a must-stop for tourists when they come to Hilton Head for their family vacations. Even as a local, my husband and I love having a date night at Fishcamp. This restaurant allows you to dine right on the banks of Broad Creek while soaking in an indescribable Lowcountry sunset. The outside bar is perfect to grab a local beer, craft cocktail, or glass of wine with friends for happy hour or while you’re waiting for your table.

Right next door to Fishcamp is Broad Creek Marina. Whether or not you’re a boat enthusiast, it’s fun to catch a glimpse of the local boats docking after being out on the ocean. Fishcamp offers lunch, brunch, and dinner with a variety of dishes the whole family will love.

Carolina Crab Company

Located in Palmetto Bay Marina, Carolina Crab Company is the perfect atmosphere to kick back, enjoy a drink and crack open a crab leg or two! The menu has an array of seafood, burgers, and even light, healthy options for those who are trying to maintain their beach bodies.

The patio at Carolina Crab is also the perfect spot to bring your four-legged friend to enjoy the ambiance along with you.

Also, the Palmetto Bay Marina facilities were just recently fully renovated. The renovations included dock, restrooms, fueling stations, patio areas, and more. So, after dinner take a stroll to the end of the docks where you may be able to see a dolphin or two swim by!

Local Pie

Who doesn’t love pizza?! When I first moved to the area, I was nervous that I wouldn’t be able to find a pizza place I loved as much as the pizza places up in the northeast. Boy, was I wrong!

Local Pie’s wood-fired pizza is a pizza enthusiast’s dream! With gluten-free, vegetarian, and vegan options, they have options for everyone.

They have two locations, one on Hilton Head and the other in Bluffton. Both locations have patios that provide a low-key, casual atmosphere where you can enjoy some live music, watch a sports game and try some local beers.

#Insider Tip: If you have kids, your server will bring you a ball of dough while you are waiting for your food. Kids love trying out their pizza-making skills!

Old Oyster Factory

The Old Oyster Factory has been around for over 30 years! This family-friendly restaurant is located on the marsh side of Broad Creek. The panoramic views of the marshland landscape, make this patio one of Hilton Head’s finest waterfront dining destinations.

From seafood to steaks, there is plenty of variety on the menu for everyone in the family to enjoy. Of course, you can’t forget to order some freshly cached oysters. Hundreds of fresh oysters are shucked daily at Old Oyster Factory. You can even watch the professionals shuck them over at the Oyster Bar.

The Crazy Crab

This local favorite has two locations on the island: One in Harbour Town located within Sea Pines and the other off of Hwy 278 on the North End of the island.

The Jarvis Creek location has a patio you are going to want to take advantage of to see a picturesque Lowcountry sunset. Also, located on property, is a playground and the largest salt-water fish tank in Hilton Head. These are great ways to keep the young children entertained during dinner. Don’t forget to order the award-winning crab legs, you will not be disappointed.

Rainy Day Activities on Hilton Head Island [8 Suggestions]

It’s always a bummer to have a rainy day during your Hilton Head vacation, but fear not, we’ve got ideas for keeping the littles (and not so littles) entertained while you’re waiting for the rain clouds to clear.

Visit the Sandbox Children’s Museum – The Sandbox has become one of Hilton Head’s favorite destinations for both visiting families and locals. The Sandbox has two convenient locations: one on Hilton Head Island and one at the Tanger 2 Outlets in Bluffton. Both locations offer children a hands-on, interactive experience they won’t soon forget. Children of all ages will love the flight simulator where they can “navigate the friendly skies” in a real jet, listen to commands from air traffic control through their captain’s headphones, and even don a pilot costume to complete the experience. Transition from air to sea as you explore their 48” saltwater aquarium filled with unique sea creatures. Little artists will love the rhythm and hues art room, and no visit is complete without a stop in the Loggerhead Sandcastle where children are surrounded by sand, sea, and sky. Kids can put on hard hats and construction gear while working with giant lego blocks or take a trip to their grocery corner. There’s something for everyone at this family-centered attraction (you’ll want to check it out even if it’s not raining)!

Make a Reservation at The Art Cafe – The Art Cafe is a paint-your-own pottery studio that promises to be a family favorite activity. The Art Cafe is open Monday – Saturday and a reservation is required. When your family arrives, you’ll have the opportunity to pick out a piece of pottery to paint, and their friendly staff will help get you started. Upon completion, the team will glaze and fire your artwork for you. Try to plan this activity during the early days of your visit because your piece won’t be finished until 3 days later (don’t worry though. They’ll arrange to have your pieces shipped if you’re leaving soon after your visit). Enjoy food and drinks while you paint including beer and wine for the grown-ups!
